A Mella on Makar Sankranti
On the occasion of Makar Sankranti {Marks the transition of the Sun into Makara rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path , remains constant on 14th January} large number of people from surrounding villages converge at the place of birth of the well-known Sanskrit lyricist Jayadeva (author of "Geet Gobindo" ) . He is most known for his composition, the epic poem Gita Govinda, which depicts the divine love of Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu, and his consort, Radha.
I reach Ajayghat (in Burdhwan district), opposite of Kenduli village (in Birbhum district), by road (26 KM) from Durgapur . For crossing the river, there was a earthen 'bridge' post raining season. I found the descriptions of Mella , as in following poem (given to me by an old gentleman) so accurate :-
